We first saw 27 year old primary school teacher, Danyl Johnson, in episode 1, where he had what Dannii called a “perfect” first audition at the O2. His performance of ‘With a Little Help from My Friends’ wowed the crowd and the judges. He got a standing ovation from all the judges, and was obviously ecstatic at the response.
Louis said “I thank God that you came in here today.” and Cheryl said she would take him in her category right there. Simon said that it was “the best first audition I have ever heard.” With 4 very enthusiastic Yes votes from the judges, Danyl Johnson had a lot to live up to at bootcamp.
“I want to do this so much,” Danyl said before he went on stage to perform ‘Holding Back the Years’. The judges didn’t look impressed at the start of the song and the comments were mixed. Louis thought he was a little bit overconfident, and Simon thought he’d made the wrong choice. Danyl admitted afterwards he’d been nervous and was worried whether he’d done enough.
‘Falling’, the Alicia Keys song, was Danyl’s first choice at Simon’s house. He looked like he’d got ants in his pants when he performed it, but his voice was undeniably amazing. He also sang ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ Simon and Sinitta both looked impressed, but Danyl wasn’t convinced he’d done enough to make it through to the live shows. Luckily for him, he had.
